Directed by Todd Phillips of The Hangover fame, Joker follows Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man with psychiatric illnesses who is looked down upon and bullied by most of the people he comes into contact with. Gradually, Arthur gives into some of his dark and violent impulses, morphing into a version of the Joker from the Batman franchise.
Movies continue to be a vital part of our cultural fabric because they provide a unique combination of entertainment, education, and connection. They allow us top 10 movies to temporarily escape our own lives, explore the depths of human emotion, and share experiences with others. Whether it’s the thrill of a fast-paced action scene or the thought-provoking power of a dramatic film, movies capture our attention in a way few other mediums can.
In Babygirl, Nicole Kidman plays Romy, a high-powered CEO who gets swept into an affair with one of the company’s interns. Power imbalances in their relationships assert themselves in different ways, which only fuels the affair. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Australians and Traditional Custodians of the lands where we live, learn, and work. According to #OscarsSoWhite creator April Reign, it “shatters the notion that black films can’t travel”. In other words, films can shape the way we’re making sense of the world we’re living in right now — regardless of the period they’re set in. Netflix has earned its first Best Picture nomination for Spanish-language drama Roma, with Black Panther becoming the first superhero film to earn a nod for the coveted Oscars category.
The two build a virtual reality where they bring their characters to life. The film was a financial success that earned Downey his second Oscar nomination, but it was also an exceedingly controversial film for a number of reasons. Some found the film to be a brilliant commentary on the stigma against those with mental illnesses, as well as the state of care for those with mental illnesses in the United States. Others found it to be two hours of wall-to-wall misery that, while thoughtful, lacked the entertainment value necessary to be a truly great film. In the time since its release, Phoenix’s performance has continued to receive praise, but the film has remained extremely controversial.
The INFP loves being able to dive into these other worlds, and allow their imagination to run wild. It indicates the movie has encouraged you to feel more positive and inspired. Movies may motivate us to make positive changes in our lives, and movies’ strong characters can inspire us to do the same.
This entire approach to storytelling within the Craig era proved to be controversial. While 2006’s Casino Royale is an all-time classic, the rest of the Craig era left fans of the older films hungry for their campy charm, while newer fans were pleased with the continuous story and more serious tone. No Time to Die attempted to appease older fans by paying homage to the over-the-top nature of earlier films, but it didn’t fully satisfy the desire for an old-school Bond adventure. Fans of Craig’s tenure were pleased by the closure brought by No Time to Die, but it stands as one of the most polarizing 007 films to date. (Who can’t relate?) It mostly focuses on Julie (Renate Reinsve) and her journey to young adulthood, but Anders Danielsen Lie co-stars as the man she crosses paths with over and over.

Films are often seen primarily as a form of entertainment, but it’s worth remembering cinema is also an art form. “The other growth area has been what you’d call ‘para-cinematic exhibition experiences’ — movie events in bars, or rooftop cinemas,” says Dr McQuire. In other words, films can be “a safe space” where we can find alternative role models to identify with, and observe those characters’ behaviours as they tackle challenges similar to our own. When we buy a ticket to a film made by a diverse team, telling a story of a group of people not often represented on screen, we’re encouraging Hollywood to continue making diverse films, says Dr McQuire. Although streaming services provide on-demand entertainment that would’ve been unthinkable even a few years ago, seeing a film with friends remains an important ritual for many of us.
Are you aware that watching movies with different language backgrounds will gradually give you some of the vocabularies that frequently appear in the movie’s dialogue? Even if we still watch those movies with subtitles, this is one of the advantages of watching movies in languages besides our native language. Sometimes, the brain may unconsciously repeat familiar vocabulary to recognize its meaning or even pronounce it correctly. These films help me unwind after a long day and I believe that humor is an excellent way to lift my spirits. The swelling music, the outpouring of emotions, the lean-in and eventual kiss — is there anything that gets the heart pumping faster than a good movie romance? And with so many varieties of love stories set to film, from lighthearted romantic comedies to more dramatic stories full of yearning and swooning, romance fans are spoiled for choice.
Going to the movies simply makes me happy, and I’ll never ever get tired of going to watch them. Beyond entertainment, movies can likely provide insight into people, with different genres presenting them with many new insights. Watching movies from other countries tells us much about each country’s culture and national values. Watching movies can also give a different view to each viewer from the beginning of the story itself. Each movie’s plot or characters will provide us with a different perspective than anyone else. It gives us insight into things we did not know before without recognizing them.

Jillian Lynch, a psychotherapist based in Sydney, says films provide “an opportunity for viewers to recognise themselves in a character or some part of a film’s narrative in order to undergo change”. How “fiction can explore historic events in different ways to a documentary” is a theme that has underpinned the career of Robert Connolly, the Australian director whose credits include Romulus, My Father (2007) and Balibo (2009).

They often like experiencing art, and some movies can truly inspire the INTJ if they are special enough. They might be a bit picky about the movies they like, feeling like many of them aren’t quite up to their own expectations of true art. While they can be picky, INTJs will certainly enjoy being able to connect with the movies that spark something inside of them. In the years since, its visuals have remained astonishing, but Avatar has earned somewhat of a mixed reputation, as, while it has plenty of dedicated fans, it has also faced the ire of a vocal group of detractors.

The film faced a notoriously troubled production, with director Zack Snyder leaving halfway through and being replaced with Joss Whedon, who finished work on the film but wasn’t ultimately credited as its director. Following the disappointing quality of the final product, fans of Snyder’s interpretation of the DC Extended Universe remained curious about how the film would have turned out with Snyder at the helm. In a surprising move, they were allowed to find out when Zack Snyder’s Justice League released on HBO Max in 2021.
